What Are the Catholic Steps?

The Catholic Steps are a quantized vision of what Jesus taught his disciples. They are a sacramental path to freedom from sin, addiction, and despair. The Steps are first and foremost vectored towards the Eucharist. When we walk with Jesus in the Eucharist, we walk through the fires of earth, unfettered and unhurt. Free.

On your first journey through the steps, don't rush the process. Carefully choose a sponsor and savor the journey of discovery. After you've gone through the Steps thoroughly the first time, the Steps will become a Sacramental Rhythm for your life. You will find yourself working them over and over, focusing on one at a time, depending on what is going on in your personal or professional life.

Whatever your struggles, God is the answer. And we find Him in the Catholic Church. Rest assured that you can trust the time tested wisdom of Jesus Christ. Everything might not be ok right now. But it will be. Your job is to keep going. No matter what happens in life, keep going. If you choose this Path, here are the Steps you will take.

  1. IAdmit I AM attached to X.
  2. IICome to believe in the Eucharist.
  3. IIITurn my life over to the Holy Spirit.
  4. IVMake a list of my resentments.
  5. VShare with my sponsor and forgive.
  6. VIMake a list of all persons I have harmed.
  7. VIIMake amends wherever possible.
  8. VIIISacramental Confession.
  9. IXLawfully receive the Eucharist.
  10. XAdmit my wrongs when they occur.
  11. XIContinue to grow in my relationship with the Trinity.
  12. XIIGo, therefore, and make Catholics of all nations.

How to Use This Site

The first thing you'll want to do is sign in and create a profile. You can do this by clicking 'Sign In' in the upper right hand corner of this page. Or by clicking the gold button at the bottom. Stay with us for a few more paragraphs. It'll be worth it.

Fellowship with others fuels your spiritual growth. This site has been designed to do that for Catholics in a safe and systematic way. If you would like to be cautious at first, we suggest turning on the Anonymity Mode and that will make you invisible to the community, while still enabling you to work through the Steps privately. At some point, I will tell you that this approach will only take you so far. Isolation leads to depression and death. While fellowship leads to joy and life.

Courage is needed here. If you are wondering what has been holding you back, it might be as simple as this: Summon the courage to connect with others. Stop judging. And accept others for exactly who they are, fellow travelers.

Here are a few of the tools that we've built for you to connect with others.

The Author

Saul Remi Hernandez

Saul Remi Hernandez

Saul Remi Hernandez is the principal author of The Catholic Steps. He hails from the Diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana. He has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in Physics, both from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He has worked in the oilfield, taught at universities, and high schools. At his core, he is a teacher. He currently lives in Steubenville, Ohio where he teaches Physics online, writes books, and builds learning platforms.

He did not write the Steps alone. Most notably, the Holy Spirit chose to express himself concretely through two Roman Catholic Priests, one in the Diocese of Burlington, Vermont and another in the Diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana. Credit is also owed to the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous and its principal author, Bill Wilson. He was the first person to quantize spirituality into a list of steps. His twelve steps were first published in 1939 and have proven useful for the spiritual development of millions of souls. Saul simply took the next step and applied the principle of quantization to the Sacramental Way in the Catholic Church.

Saul's true passion is serving the homeless and leading people to the Eucharist. He considers it his responsibility, and yours, to make Catholics of all nations. This was the last thing Jesus commanded before departing earth and he considers this his highest priority.

"Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

Matthew 28:19
